Comics are a plague! (well, maybe they were in the 1950’s)

The Ten-Cent Plauge

David Hajdu has written a book about the early days of comics titled, The Ten-Cent Plague. More specifically, the book concentrates on the late 1940’s and early 1950’s when comics like CRIME and MENACE printed illustrated covers depicting cut throats and severed. Teens were buying 100 million copies a month.

Comic books came under attack and there were congressional hearings and even comic book burnings. (one took place in my old home town of Binghamton, NY)

This was the McCarthy/Red Scare era things got really heated and our first amendment rights came under attack, but then when haven’t they.

Sounds like a fascinating read. I look forward to reading it. (my birthday is this May 19th)
